Week 3 leaders
Season ranking after Week 3. SEA leads defense, SF leads offense, and SF is first in combined.
How is this ranking different?
Most sites add up points or yards and divide by games. That punishes a defense for a fumble on the 4-yard line, credits them for a missed kick, and sometimes even hangs a punt-return touchdown on the unit that was on the sideline. We score each drive by how much the offense or defense was actually at fault.
Why is it called MyBad stats?
When a defense gives up a score that was on them, someone on that sideline says "my bad." This ranking is built to find those drives — and the inverse for offenses that earned theirs.
How are the scores calculated?
- It's about the score, not the yards. Yards are nice. Scores win games. Each drive gets a score; defense is judged on what it allowed, offense on what it produced.
- All scores are not the same. A fumble at your own goal line is not a 99-yard march. The defense does not eat that one, and the offense does not get full credit for punching it in from the 1 after a gift.
- If the drive starts in field-goal range, a field goal is mostly on the offense that just handed the ball over, not the defense that just took the field.
- Field goals count whether they were made or not. A defense should not climb the board because the other team missed from 32. We treat kickers as competent inside the 35, with a slight discount on longer tries.
- Special-teams touchdowns do not count against the defense. If they are not on the field, it is not their bad.
Offense is the same idea, flipped. Not calling it MyGood. That is not a thing yet.
